Know Your College Options

It's great that you're thinking about your college search, and we hope the resources below help you figure out the right college for you. Remember, your high school counselors and college and career centers are WONDERFUL resources and have a wealth of information about colleges, careers, scholarships, and pathways after high school. They want to help you and set you up for success, so stop by their office as soon as possible!

We want to equip you with the tools needed to identify the college(s) that will best match your interests and goals. You can use the resources below to research and compare colleges. Some of these sites even have self-guided virtual tours, so you can get a sense of campus from the comfort of your home or school.

Minnesota Search Engines

  • MN Private Colleges: Hoping to attend a smaller school or get a liberal arts education? You’re in luck—we have 18 private colleges in Minnesota. Learn about what schools could be a good fit.
  • MNSCU: Interested in attending a public college or university or still determining if you want an associate’s degree or a bachelor's? You can learn about what options exist for you at the 33 public colleges and universities throughout the state.
  • UMN: Looking to attend a research-focused, land-grant institution? Then explore the University of Minnesota and it’s five campuses, which each have differences focuses.

College Application Sites

  • You can use the Common App to apply to over 1,000 colleges throughout the United States.
  • Interested in attending a Historically Black College or University? The Common Black College App will allow you to apply to up to 67 HBCUs.
  • The MNSCU application also makes it easy to apply to multiple state colleges and universities in one sitting.

​​Remember, many colleges have priority deadlines between November and December, so give yourself enough time to develop a strong application.
