In 1992, Winston and Maxine Wallin started a scholarship program at South High School in Minneapolis for highly capable students from low and moderate income families. Recognizing a broader need, the Wallins extended their scholarship program to graduates of all Minneapolis public high schools beginning in 2000. The scholarship program was converted to a private operating foundation and the program continues to grow as additional donor partners join and provide "named" scholarships. With the addition of scholars from Anoka-Hennepin and St. Paul public high schools, students from the state’s three largest school districts are now represented. Through a partnership with the Medtronic Foundation, the reach of the scholarships has been expanded to include students from Brooklyn Center, Columbia Heights, Fridley, Irondale, Mounds View, Park Center, and Spring Lake Park high schools. Our newest partner, 3M, will provide scholarships for students from St. Paul majoring in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). |
